A Travel Agents Guide: Exploring Coronado Island

Updated: May 27, 2022

If you're visiting San Diego exploring Coronado Island is a must do and makes an excellent day trip for adults and kids alike.

Only fifteen minutes from downtown San Diego a visit to Coronado Island is easily accessible but feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Full of charm, with a quaint small town beach vibe, it's no wonder Coronado has long been a favorite among the rich and famous (even several President's and royalty!)

Soak up the sunshine and views of the downtown San Diego skyline from a boat tour through the harbor.

San Diego Bay

There are a variety of ways to enjoy the bay; from a sunset cruise aboard a yacht, a day charter sailing with your own crew or the iconic Flagship Ferry, there is something for everyone. If you're traveling with young children we highly recommend starting your day at Coronado Ferry Landing, here you can enjoy a waterfront marketplace with shops and restaurants and then a quick 15 minute ride across the bay aboard the Flagship Ferry. At $14 round trip and children three and under being free, this is not only a wonderful way to spend the morning but a budget-friendly one as well.

For those looking for a little more adventure there are a variety of hourly boat charters available, from powered yachts to sailing boats or kayaks, you can enjoy the bay and Southern California sunshine any way you choose. At Hooray Travel Day we can arrange all your San Diego Bay tours and reservations.

Hotel Del Coronado

We can't talk about Coronado Island without mentioning Hotel Del Coronado. Often referred to as "The Del" this historic hotel has adorned the landscape of Coronado Island since 1888. This hotel is iconic; hosting royalty, Presidents and celebrities over the years yet approachable enough for the every day visitor to explore as well. Throughout the hotel you will find photos and memorabilia telling this landmarks rich history, which everyone is welcome to explore. San Diego locals and day visitors are welcome to visit the hotel grounds, spa, restaurants, shops and beach without overnight accommodations. Interested in a stay or day pass access to Hotel Del Coronado pools? Hooray Travel Day can assist in planning either a stay or day pass access for you and your family.

Biking

Biking on Coronado is the perfect family activity and you have a variety of options to choose from. If you are traveling with young children our recommendation would be to rent a Surrey or Double Surrey. These one of kind bikes allow for 2 to 6 individuals to ride and have a basket for young children in the front. A unique and fun way to explore Coronado it's sure to create memories you'll never forget.

A great way to explore Coronado via bicycle is the Bayshore Trail and Coronado Bike trail, combined this is a 6 mile trail that will take you all along the island and is fairly flat so great for even beginners.

Areas the whole family will love...

Tidelands Park is a great place to visit if you are traveling with little ones. This park offers beach views, picnic tables, a play area, ample parking and a bike path from the Silver Strand to the Old Ferry Landing.

Spreckels Park is centrally located on Coronado Island and its most popular park. Located at 7th Street and Orange Avenue this park spans 8 acres featuring a playground, gazebo and restrooms. Visits during the summer months allow you to enjoy the Coronado Summer Concert Series which features a live concert every Sunday.

Orange Avenue: Named after the orange trees that originally lined it Orange Avenue is now the central hub of Coronado with a variety of shops and dining options to explore as well as historic homes and parks. Start at the Coronado Ferry Landing and make your way toward Hotel Del Coronado taking in all the charm along the way.

Dining

Foodies delight, not only does Coronado have abundant charm but also many delightful dining options.

Little Frenchie is a charming bistro, enjoy a glass of wine at an outdoor table with a cheese plate and let your mind take you a world away. Friday through Sunday they offer brunch with bruléed french toast that is not to be missed.

The whole family is sure to enjoy Miguel's Cocina with it's atmospheric patio, fresh margarita's for the adults and mouth watering Mexican entree's including a variety of kids menu items Miguel's never disappoints.

Another must visit for kids and adults on Coronado is Moo Time Creamery, locally made and hand-crafted this ice cream with exciting flavors but even better are treats like homemade ice cream whoopie pies called "moopies" (delicious ice cream sandwiched between two cookies), bon-bons and "mootacos". What's a mootacos you ask? A homemade waffle shell filled with ice cream and either cookie dough or chocolate fudge, dipped in chocolate, and topped with sprinkles, peanuts, or chocolate chips.

In the mood for pizza? Always a favorite with two locations on the island Village Pizzeria is sure to satisfy all your hungry family members. Offering daily specials and a pizza flavor of the month there is something for everyone. We highly recommend branching out and trying their Brussel Sprout pizza, with a garlic and olive oil base it is topped with bacon, parmesan, ricotta, crushed red pepper and a balsamic glaze.

Even with all that we've shared here we've only scratched the surface on all that Coronado has to offer, how amazing is that? A charming and unique island a visit to Coronado can be customized to be perfect as a couples getaway or a family visit full of exploration, adventure, amazing food and of course beach time.
